Sweet Cleats,
Here is my quick assessment of this weekend's games.
Saturday: The Sweet Cleats showed terrific technical skill and insight. Several players demonstrated some very nice individual ball skill and team insight (seeing and understanding each other on the field and making passes and combinations) was outstanding. For the second week in a row, we controlled the tempo and pace of the game and this time we came out ahead.
Sunday: There was no technical skill difference between the Reston Cyclones and the SweetCleats. If anything, on whole we appeared to work more combinations and had a bit more organization. Unfortunately, field conditions were not so great and the other team played a different game than we are use to by muscling and running the ball down. What is really great from a learning perspective is that each of the teams we have played has brought a different aspect of game to the Sweet Cleats and has allowed up to learn about ourselves in the process. The first, almost no build up to scoring at all. Every goal was a breakaway. The second team enabled us to have excellent organization and work all areas of the field. The third basically out-muscled the Sweet Cleats and I think threw many of us off of our game by causing many of us to whack the ball like they were doing so often rather than to settle the ball down and start a new play. But boy did I see some really SWEET individual moves out their today. Our girls will learn a great deal from the Reston game; a great deal about contending with both the player in opposition and the ball, and learning to use their bodies more to maintain possession (shielding). Each game we play with a team that likes to get physical will help the Sweet Cleats learn to counter it.
Thus far, the Sweet Cleats are making this coach very proud to be their coach. They seem committed to the task. Yes, there are some let downs during the games but I don't think this is a lack of motivation as much as it is just getting to understand that soccer is a fluid rather than static game (very little stoppage of play) that requires alot of fitness.
Cheers to the Sweet Cleat, keep up the awesome play and please let get some comments and chatter on this Blog.
